Event Management Offers Hands-On Experience to Columbia Students

Each year, dozens of Columbia students get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make campus events happen while earning a paycheck and gaining professional experience.

Each academic year, Columbia Event Management employs 25-50 student staff as part of its events team. From helping guests check coats at galas to serving at receptions, proctoring events, or assisting in the office, students play an essential role in bringing Columbia’s events to life.

“The students are why we are here,” said Erin Medina, Assistant General Manager within Event Management. “Working with them and teaching them is not only symbiotic in the typical way but the very circular nature of the relationship between EM and the students is unique. Whether they are with us for a semester or years, some keep in touch, visit or even send their siblings or friends to work with us. They have a loyalty and love of the school that only comes from a student.”

Student employees are onboarded on a rolling basis through one of two orientations offered each semester. Once trained, most continue working throughout the semester, and many stay for multiple years. On any given week, at least a few dozen students are actively helping events across campus run smoothly.

Working with Event Management is more than just a campus job. Students gain hands-on experience in customer service, event logistics, and teamwork: skills that translate well beyond graduation. The department also makes sure the work schedule fits around classes and exams, so students can balance their academic and work commitments.
